Why is Coaching so Popular?
Do you ever wonder why coaching is becoming one of the most popular
forms of personal and professional development?
Basically, I think there are three main reasons.
- Coaching is cost-effective for small businesses.
Many small businesses
have been hard hit by the current financial crisis. But they still need
to innovate and expand to survive and the going can be lonely! A
corporate coach can work with the CEO as a confidential objective mirror
or a sounding board to clarify and prioritize key goals; maximize
existing strengths; establish criteria and realistic benchmarks to
assess progress; and improve relationships with employees, customers and
clients. This means that the business can respond quickly and flexibly
to new challenges with better time management and less stress on the
owner.
- Coaching focuses on specific issues with specific results.
After determining the big picture of where the business, individual or team
wants to go in the longer term, the coach then works with the client to
target specific realistic steps that will take the client there. In this
respect coaching can go beyond training. Coaching looks at the context,
the skills, competencies and strengths of the client, and most of all,
the very specific needs of the client at that moment. The advantage of
this is that the client is able to respond more quickly to new
challenges with greater confidence that s/he is making well-informed
decisions.
- Coaching empowers individuals and teams. An essential assumption of the
coaching process is that individuals and teams have sufficient internal
resources to find their own unique and effective solutions to whatever
is challenging them. By giving back to the client the responsibility for
decision-making, the coach leverages on the learning that is taking
place. This has long-term benefits for the organization and the
individual. There is greater individual commitment to achieving whatever
goals have been jointly agreed, and greater satisfaction when these
goals are achieved. Systematic coaching within an organization can help
to raise both the productivity and satisfaction of employees.
